After spending time at the 2 Michelin starred Ryu Gin in Hong Kong and keen to introduce his experimental and modern cooking style to his heritage, Andrew Speldewinde set up Contemporary Ceylon in 2015. The concept involved guests booking an evening at Speldewinde's apartment where they'd experience a tasting menu featuring new interpretations of Sri Lankan food. From its humble beginnings as a home cook venture, Contemporary Ceylon went on to organise large scale pop up events at venues such as the Dutch Burgher Union in Colombo.
Eager to hone his craft, Speldewinde decided to journey to Australia and has since worked at many Melbourne hospitality venues including Shannon Bennett's Vue De Monde. He has also managed to host several Contemporary Ceylon pop ups in Australia, using his new experiences to take the brand to new heights.
While his style and techniques may have evolved over time, the overall concept of Contemporary Ceylon has remained the same with Speldewinde drawing heavily from his Sri Lankan roots.

In early 2018 Contemporary Ceylon opened a seven bedroom boutique property by the beach in Wadduwa, Sri Lanka. The Villa is a mere hour south of Colombo by car and offers the perfect gourmet escape for those wanting to get away from the daily grind of city life.
